What it does have is a live-in superintendent, a virtual doorman intercom for visitors and smart package lockers for deliveries, and it is a pet-friendly building where cats and dogs are welcome. The apartments hold onto their prewar character. Original hardwood floors, exposed brick, tall windows and subway-tile baths are found in every home, and several keep a decorative fireplace mantel. Kitchens have gas ranges, with dishwashers in the one- and two-bedrooms, and ceiling fans are standard. The mix runs from 395-square-foot studios to an 850-square-foot two-bedroom on the top floor. The East Village means Tompkins Square Park, the community gardens on Avenues B and C, St. Marks Place and some of the city's best cheap eats and cocktail bars. Kazuza is a 4-minute walk, Key Food Urban Marketplace is 7, Clinton St. Baking Company is 8 and Momofuku Noodle Bar is 9. The L at 1 Av is about a 10-minute walk, with the 6 at Astor Pl and the F at 2 Av also nearby.

Renewed for a second year without a second thought. The intercom works well for visitors, the building is clean, and Clinton St. Baking Company is close enough for a weekend treat.

Good apartment, good block. The L at First Avenue is a bit of a walk, but the 6 and F are both options. Key Food is close enough for weeknight grocery runs. Exposed brick looks just like the photos.

One-bedroom with a dishwasher, which feels like a luxury in a building this old. Morning light through the tall windows is beautiful. I walk my dog to Tompkins most mornings.

Character is great and the location is excellent. The building is old, and the hallway lighting needed attention for a while. It got fixed eventually, but I had to follow up twice.

My studio has the fireplace mantel and it makes the whole room. Ground floor, so no stairs. Leasing was straightforward and they were upfront about everything including the walk-up situation.

Fifth-floor two-bedroom with a lot of space for Manhattan. Four flights is a workout, no getting around it, but the sunset out the west windows makes up for it. Package lockers mean I don't worry about deliveries.

Real East Village apartment with original floors and a brick wall I would not trade for anything. The super is in the building and has been great about small repairs. Kazuza around the corner is my regular spot.
