About the neighborhood
Greek tavernas on Ditmars Boulevard, beer gardens and bakeries, and Astoria Park's big pool beneath the Hell Gate Bridge along the East River.
Astoria fills the northwest corner of Queens, bordered by the East River and stitched together by the elevated N/W line along 31st Street.
Its residential blocks mix two- and three-story houses, brick walk-ups and prewar apartment buildings, with commercial strips every few blocks. Corbel & Stoop's walk-ups here are Thirty-First Street, The Thirty-Sixth and Ditmars Corner.
Astoria eats well. Ditmars Boulevard and 31st Street are known for Greek tavernas and seafood, 30th Avenue for cafés and bakeries, and Steinway Street for the strip of Egyptian and Middle Eastern restaurants and hookah cafés known as Little Egypt, a 9-minute walk. Titan Foods, an 8-minute walk, is a large Greek grocery. Basil Brick Oven Pizza is 7 minutes away and The Bonnie is about 10 minutes on foot.
Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden on 24th Avenue has been pouring since 1910, and the Museum of the Moving Image on 35th Avenue covers film, television and video games beside the Kaufman Astoria Studios lot.
Astoria Park runs along the East River beneath the Hell Gate Bridge and the RFK Bridge, with a running track, tennis courts, waterfront paths and the city's largest public pool, open in summer. Socrates Sculpture Park, farther south on Vernon Boulevard, shows large outdoor works and hosts outdoor movies and markets in warmer months. The Astoria Park shoreline path is a favorite for running, with the bridges overhead the whole way.
The N/W run along 31st Street, stopping at Astoria-Ditmars Blvd, Astoria Blvd, 30 Av and Broadway, and reach Midtown in about 20 minutes. Astoria Blvd is about a 3-minute walk, and the M60 bus there runs to LaGuardia Airport. The NYC Ferry's Astoria stop at Hallets Point connects to Roosevelt Island, Long Island City and East 34th Street, and the Grand Central Parkway and RFK Bridge are minutes away by car.
