About the neighborhood
Brownstone side streets between Central Park and Riverside Park, with the Museum of Natural History and Lincoln Center within walking distance.
The Upper West Side stretches from 59th Street to about 110th Street between two of the city's great parks, Central Park to the east and Riverside Park along the Hudson.
Its side streets are lined with brownstones and rowhouses, while Central Park West, West End Avenue and Riverside Drive hold grand prewar apartment buildings. Corbel & Stoop has three buildings here: the walk-ups Eighty-Third Street Brownstone and The Sixty-Ninth, and The Columbus, a high-rise on West 87th Street.
Broadway, Amsterdam Avenue and Columbus Avenue carry the neighborhood's shops and restaurants. Zabar's, at Broadway and 80th Street, is a neighborhood landmark for smoked fish, coffee and kitchenware. Shake Shack is a 3-minute walk, Levain Bakery is about 7 minutes away and Pioneer Supermarket, 7 minutes on foot, handles groceries.
Culture is the neighborhood's calling card. The American Museum of Natural History, a 2-minute walk, sits beside the New-York Historical Society on Central Park West. Lincoln Center, at the southern edge, is home to the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Ballet and the New York Philharmonic, and the Beacon Theatre on Broadway books concerts and comedy.
Central Park is a few blocks east, with the Great Lawn, the Reservoir running track and Strawberry Fields all within reach. Riverside Park runs along the Hudson with ball fields, dog runs and the Hudson River Greenway, a car-free path for walking, running and cycling from Battery Park to the George Washington Bridge.
The 1 stops at 79 St and 86 St along Broadway, the B/C stop at 81 St-Museum of Natural History and 86 St on Central Park West, and the 2/3 express stops at 72 St. The M79 and M86 crosstown buses reach the Upper East Side, and the West Side Highway is close by car.
