About Long Island City

Skyline views from Gantry Plaza State Park, MoMA PS1 and quick hops to Midtown, with new towers rising beside older Hunters Point walk-ups.

Living in Long Island City

Long Island City sits directly across the East River from Midtown, and few places in the city are closer to Manhattan by subway.

Its waterfront has filled with glass residential towers, while the side streets of Hunters Point keep their brick rowhouses and small walk-ups. Corbel & Stoop has three buildings here: the walk-ups Forty-Seventh Avenue and Hunters Point Row, and Court Square Lofts, a high-rise on Jackson Avenue.

Dining, shopping and entertainment

Vernon Boulevard is the neighborhood's main street, with restaurants, cafés and bars running from Borden Avenue up toward Queensbridge. Around Court Square, Court Square Diner is a 3-minute walk, Trader Joe's is 3 minutes away and Jora is about 6 minutes on foot. Partners Coffee, roughly 9 minutes away, is a reliable morning stop.

MoMA PS1 on Jackson Avenue, one of the oldest contemporary art institutions in the country, shows rotating exhibitions in a former public school. The Noguchi Museum and Socrates Sculpture Park are a short ride north, and Silvercup Studios keeps film and TV production nearby.

Parks and the outdoors

Gantry Plaza State Park, named for the restored railroad gantries at its edge, has piers, lawns and the famous Pepsi-Cola sign, with views straight across to the United Nations and the Empire State Building. Hunters Point South Park continues the waterfront south toward Newtown Creek with a kayak launch, dog run and sweeping lawns. Murray Playground, a minute's walk, is the closest neighborhood green.

Getting around

The 7 stops at Vernon Blvd-Jackson Av and Court Sq and reaches Grand Central in a stop or two. Court Sq, about 4 minutes on foot, also serves the E/M and the G, which also stops at 21 St. The LIRR at Hunterspoint Av runs to Penn Station and the rest of Long Island, and the NYC Ferry stops at Hunters Point South. The Queensboro Bridge has a bike path to Midtown.
