About the neighborhood
A neighborhood of street murals and artist studios, with late-night bars, coffee roasters and vintage shops clustered around the L train.
Bushwick stretches east from the Williamsburg border toward Queens, its former factory buildings now filled with artist studios, rehearsal spaces and small manufacturers.
The residential blocks to the south are lined with wood-frame and brick rowhouses and walk-ups, and the whole area moves at a creative, late-night pace. Corbel & Stoop's buildings here are Starr Street Lofts and Greene & Irving, a walk-up on Greene Avenue a few blocks from Irving Square Park.
The streets around Jefferson Street and Flushing Avenue are where the neighborhood shows off: warehouse walls covered in large murals, many organized by the Bushwick Collective around Troutman Street and St. Nicholas Avenue. Coffee roasters, taquerias, pizzerias and natural wine bars fill the blocks in between. L Train Vintage is a 3-minute walk, Bossa Nova Civic Club, a well-known dance club, is 4 minutes away, and Knickerbocker Bagel is about 7 minutes on foot. House of Yes on Wyckoff Avenue hosts performance nights and parties.
For everyday shopping, Knickerbocker Avenue and Myrtle Avenue are lined with grocers, bakeries and discount stores.
Maria Hernandez Park, a 9-minute walk, has handball and basketball courts, a dog run and shady paths along Knickerbocker Avenue. Irving Square Park offers another neighborhood green with playgrounds and benches. Highland Park, on the Queens border, adds hilltop trails, a reservoir and views back across Brooklyn. In warmer months, the neighborhood's open studios weekend and rooftop bars pull plenty of activity outdoors as well.
The L stops at Jefferson St and DeKalb Av and reaches Union Square in about 20 minutes. The J/M/Z share a station at Myrtle Av, and the M stops at Knickerbocker Av, about an 8-minute walk, with direct service into Midtown along Sixth Avenue. Bike lanes on Bushwick Avenue, Evergreen Avenue and Grand Street link toward Williamsburg and the bridges.
