About the neighborhood

About Crown Heights

Wide prewar blocks running down to Eastern Parkway, with Franklin Avenue restaurants and the Brooklyn Museum and Botanic Garden close by.

Living in Crown Heights

Crown Heights spreads south from Atlantic Avenue to Eastern Parkway and beyond, a grid of wide streets lined with limestone and brownstone rowhouses and handsome prewar apartment buildings.

Eastern Parkway, the tree-lined boulevard designed by Olmsted and Vaux, runs through the middle and hosts the West Indian American Day Carnival parade every Labor Day. Corbel & Stoop's walk-ups here are Dean Street Flats, Sterling Place and The Park Place.

Dining, shopping and entertainment

Franklin Avenue is the neighborhood's restaurant row, with cafés, bakeries, natural wine bars and pizza places packed into a few blocks between Eastern Parkway and Atlantic Avenue. Nostrand Avenue is lined with Caribbean bakeries and roti shops. Peppa's Jerk Chicken is a 3-minute walk, Taqueria Milear is 5 minutes away and Lula Bagel is about 8 minutes on foot. Urban Market by Key Food, 3 minutes away, handles groceries.

Culture is close at hand: the Brooklyn Children's Museum, a 4-minute walk, sits beside Brower Park, and the Brooklyn Museum on Eastern Parkway holds one of the largest art collections in the country, with free First Saturday evenings.

Parks and the outdoors

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden, next door to the museum, is famous for its cherry esplanade in spring, a Japanese hill-and-pond garden and its conservatories. Past the garden, Prospect Park opens up with the Long Meadow, the lake and miles of loops for running and cycling. Brower Park adds playgrounds and ball courts closer to home.

Getting around

The 2/3/4/5 stop at Franklin Av on Eastern Parkway, with the 4/5 express reaching Lower Manhattan in about 20 minutes. The A/C run under Fulton Street with a stop at Nostrand Av, and the Franklin Avenue Shuttle stops at Park Pl, linking the A/C to the B/Q at Prospect Park. A protected bike path runs along Eastern Parkway toward Grand Army Plaza.
