About the neighborhood
Landmarked brownstone blocks around Herbert Von King Park, with a growing strip of cafés and restaurants along Lewis and Tompkins Avenues.
Bedford-Stuyvesant holds one of the largest collections of intact Victorian brownstones in the country, and much of it is protected within the Stuyvesant Heights Historic District.
Block after block of stoops, bay windows and ornate cornices run between Fulton Street and Broadway. Corbel & Stoop manages three walk-ups here, Halsey Brownstone, The Macon and Jefferson Hall, all on classic tree-lined residential streets.
The Macon branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, a Carnegie library at Macon Street and Lewis Avenue, is a neighborhood anchor worth a look on its own.
Lewis Avenue and Tompkins Avenue have filled in with cafés, bakeries, wine bars and restaurants over the past decade, and Nostrand and Bedford Avenues add more. Corto is a 3-minute walk, WARUDE is about 5 minutes away and Peaches HotHouse, known for its hot chicken, is a 4-minute walk. LunÀtico, around 9 minutes away, hosts live music most nights. Fulton Street is the main commercial corridor, and Restoration Plaza, a 9-minute walk, holds shops, offices and the Billie Holiday Theatre.
Herbert Von King Park, between Marcy and Tompkins Avenues, has an amphitheater, ball courts, a playground and summer concerts. Fulton Park and Saratoga Park are smaller green squares tucked among the brownstones farther east, and Fort Greene Park and Prospect Park are each a short ride away. Many blocks also host summer block parties, closing the street for an afternoon of music and grilling.
The A/C run along Fulton Street, with the A express at Nostrand Av and Utica Av and the C at Kingston-Throop Avs, about 7 minutes on foot. The A reaches Lower Manhattan in roughly 20 minutes. The G stops at Bedford-Nostrand Avs for trips to Williamsburg, Greenpoint and Long Island City, and the J/Z at Halsey St run along Broadway to the Lower East Side.
