About the neighborhood

About East Village

Tompkins Square Park, community gardens on Avenues B and C and St. Marks Place, with some of the city's best cheap eats and cocktail bars.

Living in the East Village

The East Village runs from 14th Street down to Houston Street, between the Bowery and the East River, and its blocks of five- and six-story tenement walk-ups have housed generations of artists, musicians and writers.

The streets are dense and lively at almost any hour, with storefronts at nearly every corner. Corbel & Stoop's walk-ups here are Sixth Street Walk-Up, Seventh & B, and The Tenth, on East 10th Street near Tompkins Square Park.

Dining, shopping and entertainment

Few neighborhoods pack in as many restaurants per block. St. Marks Place and the surrounding streets are known for ramen, dumplings, pizza by the slice and late-night falafel, while Second Avenue and the lettered avenues hold old Ukrainian diners, natural wine bars and tasting-menu spots. Momofuku Noodle Bar is a 9-minute walk, Veniero's Pasticceria, open since 1894, is about 10 minutes away, and Kazuza is a 4-minute walk for a drink. Key Food Urban Marketplace, 7 minutes away, covers groceries.

McSorley's Old Ale House on East 7th Street claims to be one of the city's oldest bars, and the cocktail bars on Avenue A and Avenue B keep things going late.

Parks and the outdoors

Tompkins Square Park, between Avenues A and B, has a dog run, basketball courts, a playground and the elms that shade its paths. Dozens of community gardens fill lots on Avenues B and C, including La Plaza Cultural at Ninth Street and Avenue C. East River Park, with ballfields, a waterfront promenade and the John V. Lindsay track about 10 minutes away, runs along the river.

Getting around

The L stops at 1 Av and 3 Av on 14th Street, the 6 at Astor Pl and the F at 2 Av on Houston Street. The M14 Select Bus Service crosses 14th Street, and the M15 runs along First and Second Avenues. Protected bike lanes on First and Second Avenues connect north to Midtown.
