About Washington Heights

Fort Tryon Park and the Cloisters, Hudson River views from Riverside Drive, and a lively Dominican food scene along Broadway and St. Nicholas.

Living in Washington Heights

Washington Heights occupies the high ridge of northern Manhattan, from about 155th Street up toward Dyckman Street, with the Hudson River on one side and the Harlem River on the other.

Its streets are lined with large prewar apartment buildings, many with Art Deco lobbies, and the hills give some blocks long views over the river and the George Washington Bridge. Corbel & Stoop's walk-ups here are Riverside Heights and Fort Tryon Flats.

Dining, shopping and entertainment

Broadway and St. Nicholas Avenue are the main commercial streets, lined with Dominican restaurants, bakeries and juice bars. Elsa La Reina del Chicharron is a 3-minute walk, and Columbia Wine Co. is a minute away. Key Food Supermarkets, 2 minutes on foot, handles groceries. The United Palace on Broadway, a restored 1930 movie palace, hosts concerts and film screenings.

History runs deep here: the Morris-Jumel Mansion, the oldest surviving house in Manhattan, briefly served as George Washington's headquarters in 1776, and the cobblestoned Sylvan Terrace sits right beside it.

Parks and the outdoors

Fort Tryon Park, laid out by the Olmsted Brothers, has terraced gardens, Hudson views and The Met Cloisters, the Metropolitan Museum's branch for medieval art. Highbridge Park follows the Harlem River and leads to the High Bridge, the city's oldest standing bridge, now a pedestrian path to the Bronx. Fort Washington Park runs along the Hudson to the Little Red Lighthouse beneath the George Washington Bridge.

Getting around

The A express stops at 168 St, 175 St and 181 St and reaches Midtown in about 20 minutes, with the C also at 168 St. The 1 stops at 157 St and 168 St along Broadway. The Hudson River Greenway runs the length of the west side by bike, and the George Washington Bridge and Henry Hudson Parkway are minutes away by car.
