Life at Halsey Brownstone

A virtual doorman intercom, smart package lockers, a bike storage room and private storage cages take care of the practical things, and pets are welcome. There are two plans. The One Bedroom homes are full-floor flats with a dishwasher, gas range and ceiling fans, while the Two Bedroom Duplex homes add one and a half baths, private outdoor space and an in-unit washer and dryer. Every apartment shares the same prewar finish: original hardwood floors, exposed brick, a subway-tile bath and tall east-facing windows. Halsey Street runs through Bed-Stuy's landmarked brownstone blocks, in the orbit of Herbert Von King Park and the cafés and restaurants along Lewis and Tompkins Avenues. Corto is a 3-minute walk, Peaches HotHouse about 4 minutes and Restoration Plaza about 9. Kingston-Throop Avs station on the C is 7 minutes away, and the A/C, the G at Bedford-Nostrand Avs and the J/Z at Halsey St are all within reach.

Top-floor duplex is the best apartment I've rented in Brooklyn. Lots of space, laundry in the unit and outdoor space of our own. The stairs are real, but worth it. Peaches HotHouse around the corner doesn't hurt either.

My dog loves the walks around the brownstone blocks. Bike storage downstairs is a plus. The one-bedroom kitchen has a dishwasher and gas range, which I didn't expect in a building this old.

The apartment has a lot of charm, but older buildings come with quirks. A window was drafty in January and took a couple of visits to sort out. Location near the C train is convenient.

Beautiful old building with the stoop and parlor floor intact. The virtual intercom took me a week to figure out but now I like being able to buzz people in from my phone. Management replies quickly.

We're in one of the duplexes and the private outdoor space gets used every warm evening. Washer and dryer in the unit means no laundromat runs. Only four apartments in the building, so it's calm and everyone looks out for each other's packages.

Having a whole floor of a real brownstone to myself still feels like a small miracle. The brick wall in my one-bedroom and the tall windows make it feel bigger than it is. Coffee at Corto most mornings, three minutes away.
