About the neighborhood
Victorian brownstones climbing toward Prospect Park, with shopping and dining along Seventh and Fifth Avenues and the Park Slope Food Coop.
Park Slope rises gently from Fourth Avenue to the edge of Prospect Park, and its side streets hold some of the best-preserved Victorian brownstones in New York, much of it within the Park Slope Historic District.
Stoops, bay windows and street trees line nearly every block. Corbel & Stoop's walk-ups here, Seventh Street House and The Second Street, sit on classic brownstone streets a short walk from both the park and the avenues.
Seventh Avenue is the traditional main street, with bookstores, cafés, bakeries and neighborhood restaurants; Fifth Avenue has a denser run of bars, restaurants and independent shops. The member-run Park Slope Food Coop on Union Street is a neighborhood institution. Barnes & Noble is a 2-minute walk, La Bagel Delight is 3 minutes away, and Hanco's, for banh mi and bubble tea, is about 8 minutes on foot.
Barclays Center, at the north end of the neighborhood, books concerts and Nets games, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music is a short walk beyond it.
Prospect Park is the centerpiece: the Long Meadow, the lake, the Ravine woodland and a 3.35-mile loop drive closed to cars. The Saturday Greenmarket at Grand Army Plaza runs year-round, and summer brings outdoor concerts to the Prospect Park Bandshell. Closer in, Washington Park and J.J. Byrne Playground, a 9-minute walk, surround the reconstructed Old Stone House.
The F/G stop at 7 Av, about 6 minutes on foot, with more service at 4 Av-9 St. The R runs under Fourth Avenue with a stop at Union St, the 2/3 stop at Grand Army Plaza, and the B/Q stop at 7 Av on Flatbush Avenue for fast trips to Manhattan. Protected bike lanes on Prospect Park West and Ninth Street connect to the park loop.
